About This Trail

Beginning at Queimadas Forestry Park, this 8.7 km moderate trail descends into the picturesque São Jorge valley, passing through four tunnels carved in rock to reach Caldeirão Verde lake—formed by water cascading 100 meters vertically from Ribeiro do Caldeirão Verde. Built in the 18th century, this levada was routed to farmlands of the Faial parish, creating iconic infrastructure that shaped Madeira's landscape. The route takes 6.5 hours and features the Natura 2000-protected Laurissilva forest where endemic fauna and flora thrive. From January 1, 2026, the trail requires advance reservations and a small fee through the SIMplifica portal to manage capacity.
