About This Trail

Located in northwestern Madeira near Porto Moniz, this 10.5 km moderate trail winds through dense Laurissilva forest in direct contact with green vegetation for almost its entire length. The name originates from historic water mills that once lined this route—ruins still visible today tell stories of Madeira's agricultural heritage. Along the 3-4 hour journey, small waterfalls and creeks enhance the experience, creating a splendid natural paradise that reflects the island's traditional irrigation system's intimate connection with landscape. However, this trail has been indefinitely closed since June 2024, so check official status before attempting.
