PR 6.6 - Vereda do Túnel do Cavalo
About This Trail
Starting next to the 'Garagem' (garage) leisure area near Caldeira, this 2-3 km easy-to-moderate trail ends at Casa do Rabaçal, the hub of Madeira's western levada system. The first 800 meters follows forest path before meeting Túnel do Cavalo (also called Furado Novo), a historic tunnel constructed between 1863-1877 to transport water from Ribeira dos Cedros and 25 Fontes sources to Calheta municipality. The approximately 800-meter tunnel was engineered to supply the Calheta hydroelectric plant, support population consumption, and irrigate agricultural lands. After crossing the tunnel, the route continues along Levada das 25 Fontes, and May is ideal for viewing vibrant spring colors and peak waterfall conditions.
