About This Trail

Beginning with breathtaking views from Portela Viewpoint, this 8.7 km northeastern trail descends through Serra das Funduras forest road before plunging into the UNESCO-protected Laurissilva forest. The dominance of the rocky outcrop Penha d'Águia—one of Madeira's greatest geological symbols—shapes the entire landscape, creating a visually memorable 3-hour hike. Casa das Funduras forestry station marks an optional detour to the Larano viewpoint overlooking Machico bay, while the route's end at Maroços showcases traditional terraced agricultural fields. As a Natura 2000 site, this forest provides critical habitat for Madeira's endemic fauna and flora within the transition zone between natural and human-modified ecosystems.
