PR 3.1 - Caminho Real do Monte
About This Trail
This 4.2 km ancient pathway links Ribeira das Cales to the parish of Monte, blending natural mountain environment with significant cultural heritage. The trail crosses an 1784 levada (water canal) near the Funchal Ecological Park Welcome Centre, then passes Pico Alto viewpoint at 1,129 meters offering panoramic views over Funchal municipality. The route follows historical Caminho Real nº24, which once served as the main mountain access route between Monte and Santana. As you arrive in Monte, you encounter architectural treasures including the historic Mother Church and Monte Palace Madeira gardens, making this a 2-hour hike that seamlessly blends nature with culture.
