PR 15 - Vereda da Ribeira da Janela
About This Trail
This 2.7 km downhill trail in northwestern Madeira descends from E.R. 209 (Curral Falso) at 820m to 400m elevation, taking just 1.5 hours to complete. Historically, locals used this vereda to reach southern villages like Calheta and Ponta do Sol, carrying barrels of wine on their backs—a testament to its role in regional commerce. The scenic landscape features traditional terraced fields supported by stone walls where potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans, and maize grow, with houses scattered along the slope between stream mouth and 400m altitude. Since October 28, 2024, a small 3-euro fee provides access, supporting trail maintenance.
