PR 14 - Levada dos Cedros
About This Trail
Built in the 17th century, this 7.2 km levada represents one of Madeira's oldest water channels, originating from Lombo do Cedro (1,000m altitude) on Ribeira da Janela's right bank. The 3-hour moderately difficult trail starts in Fanal on ER209 and ends in Curral Falso on the same road, enveloped by the lush Laurissilva forest creating a peaceful, secluded atmosphere. Highlights include beautiful forest scenery, small waterfalls, stunning Fanal forest views, and some narrow levada paths requiring careful footing in damp conditions. This ancient infrastructure demonstrates centuries-long human adaptation to Madeira's topography while maintaining pristine forest environments.

Our coliving in Funchal is a comfortable base for hiking trips — 30 to 60 minutes' drive from most central and eastern trailheads, with a community of remote workers who hit the levadas on weekends.
