PR 10 - Levada do Furado
About This Trail
One of Madeira's most popular levadas, this 11 km trail follows one of the island's oldest public water channels from Ribeiro Frio ('cold river') eastward to Portela village. The 5-hour hike offers stunning natural scenery through the lush Laurissilva forest, showcasing various green shades while revealing mountain farming landscapes of Faial, São Roque do Faial, and Porto da Cruz below. The dramatic Penha d'Águia rock formation dominates views from sections of the path, which combines atmospheric forest walking with plunging cliffsides. Though relatively flat, short tunnels and cuttings require navigation; most are short enough to avoid requiring a torch unlike some other levada trails.

Our coliving in Funchal is a comfortable base for hiking trips — 30 to 60 minutes' drive from most central and eastern trailheads, with a community of remote workers who hit the levadas on weekends.
