PR 1.1 - Vereda da Ilha
About This Trail
Beginning in the small village of Ilha, this 8.2 km trail climbs 1,376 meters to reach Pico Ruivo, Madeira's highest peak at 1,862 meters. The route uniquely crosses two distinct ecosystems within the Natura 2000 Network: the central mountain massif at higher elevations and the UNESCO-protected Laurissilva forest between 400-1,200m altitude, which exists perpetually in the fog zone. Hikers encounter endemic wildlife like the Bisbis (Madeira's smallest bird) and curious chaffinches that readily approach walkers. The 7-8 hour journey showcases the dramatic transition from coastal settlement through indigenous laurel forest to bare mountain peak, making it a complete microcosm of Madeira's ecological diversity.
